A responsive website is crucial in today’s competitive market; not only to create a positive experience for users on all devices but also to help it to rank on Google’s mobile search.

A website with a responsive web design can adapt to any screen, no matter what device is being used. It formats automatically to give the user the best possible experience on their chosen device, thus affording your website a number of benefits.

Increase in Mobile Use

To keep ahead of the competition, responsive websites are a must. A report by Ofcom reveals two-thirds of people in the UK have a smartphone, using it every day for online banking, shopping, social media and Internet browsing. In fact, one-third of Internet users say it’s their first choice of device for online browsing.

We spend twice as long using smartphones as we do on laptops or computers and this is having a direct impact on the way we look at websites. The number of people using a mobile device as their first choice for Internet browsing increased from 22% in 2014 to 33% in 2015, according to Ofcom. The impact of 4G has contributed to the boom, with 23.6 million subscriptions.

Young People

In partnership with Ipsos, Google’s research has revealed that 13 to 17-year-olds are creating a growing market for mobile use. More than ever before, today’s teenagers are using mobile devices as second nature, since they have grown up with them. They are even shopping on their mobile phone.

A survey of more than 2,000 people aged 13 to 34 years old showed that getting a mobile phone was one of the most important life events for 13 to 17-year-olds, dubbed Generation Z. Many of them got their first mobile at the age of 12 and 70% revealed they spent more than three hours per day watching mobile videos.

Two in three teenagers buy items online, with more than 50% using their mobile phone to do so. The most popular online purchases are video games, clothing and books.

Almost two-thirds of teens say it’s more convenient; 49% say they find better deals; 48% like being able to compare multiple brands without leaving home; and 41% say it’s faster than going to physical stores.

While there are more devices than ever before at their disposal, predominantly teenagers still prefer to use mobile phones, with 78% saying it’s their first choice.

Google Recommendations

Google often updates its preferences and the way it looks at websites and one of its latest recommendations is to create a responsive web design. In fact, Google has provided a mobile friendly test tool that you can use to see if your website is responsive. This is used as a ranking signal in search results, so it rewards websites that are optimised for mobile devices.

No matter what device you’re using to view a website, the user wants the optimal viewing experience. With ease of navigation and a minimum amount of scrolling, a responsive design will improve everyone’s user experience, whether they have a smartphone, tablet or desktop. Providing the best experience will encourage people to return time and time again.
